Notes: From Catherine to Khruschev by Dr. Adam Giesinger page 188, "In the years 1806/09 these immigrants in the district of Odessa established the settlement of Karlstal near Odessa." The Emigration from Germany to Russia in the Years 1763 – 1862 by Karl Stumpp page 86, "In the years 1806/19 these immigrants in the district of Odessa established the settlement of Karlstal on the estate of the Prussian cavalry officer Karl Vitsch; the 25 families were from Württemberg. In 1841 they founded Hoffnungstal in Bessarabia. In the years 1843-47, 75 additional families arrived from Worms, Glückstal, Bergdorf, Neudorf, Kassel, Hoffnungstal in the district of Odessa. A settlement, therefore, whose inhabitants all came from the Odessa area."
Early St. Petersburg reports reflect Karlstal families in the parish of Freudental.
The original founders of Hoffnungstal Bessarabia came from Karlstal.
