The back of an old photograph reads: Jakobina Welz (could be Walz) S Verstorbenen Tochter Maria Ziebart Arziser Ansiedler Fred Ziebart (Translater wasn't sure if the first letter was a "Z" or an "F") When she came to the United States, Jakobina was using the surname Walz/Welstz, depending on who was writing it. Possibly she had been married before--which I doubt--or had been adopted after her mother's death. She was born in about 1887-1888, arrived in the U.S. in 1908, and married Albert Reich over in Oliver County, ND, that same year. She died in 1918 in either Pollock, Campbell County, SD or in Emmons County, ND. She was visiting her sister who was married. After many decades of searching available records, her granddaughters have all but given up on finding who her family were. And since I have the tenacity of crab grass, I figured I'd give it a try. If you think you might a some useful information, I'm game. |

I'll shoot you an email too since it looks like you haven't checked back here in about a year... But I know some Walz that moved to Kidder County, ND (~50 miles east of Oliver County, ND) and a long line of Jacob's/Jakob's, so I could see her being named after a grandfather, but that was a pretty common name too. But in all my searching so far I haven't ran across any Jakobina, so it is a long shot. But if it helps, our Walz was also spelled Wolz and Waltz depending on who was screwing it up, haha. |
